Here is your chance to stand at an elevation of 9,500 feet on the rim of an active volcano. You will gaze a thousand feet down into its hot, steaming, sulphurous bottom. Accessible by a good road, only two-hours from Puntarenas , Poas Volcano National Park boats a main crater almost one mile wide and considered to have the largest geyser in the world. Occasionally these explosive eruptions can be safely viewed at marked lookouts.
We take the Pan American Highway en route to Poas, stopping the third largest city of Costa Rica, founded in 1789. Continuing our ascent up the volcano, sugar cane plantations, coffee plantations, carnations, ferns, huge strawberries and dairy farms can be seen from the comfort of your tour bus. During the climb, see the dramatic change in crops and vegetation. Once at the National Park, you will enjoy their modern facilities: Cafeteria, souvenirs shop, museum, video room and paved paths.
The oxcart, painted in bright colours and unique geometric designs, has become a symbol of Costa Rica. The tradition of craftsmanship goes back to the early 20th century when an ingenious farmer decided to break the norm and assert his individuality by painting his oxcarts with a design. The trend caught on throughout Costa Rica and today Sarchi is a famous artisan centre. Visitors can tour the oxcart factory or just shop to their hearts content in several souvenir shops, which display all types of handicrafts.
